In recent weeks there has been a lot of speculation about Google’s new social networking interface, Google+. Yes, I am a social media junkie, so of course I have a profile on Google+ and you can easily find me there. Truth is, I am only there because I have gmail and Youtube (Owned by Google) accounts and they naturally made it easy for their current users to migrate into Google+.
My Take on Google+?
Cool, but a novelty. Google executives should ask themselves “Who would be most likely to use Google+?” The answer I believe is “People who already like Facebook.”
I have seen how my friends and clients struggle with basic concepts of Facebook, and very few use it for any business purpose. A lot of them became more educated over time and are now avid users. Most still only look at it every once in a while, accept some friend requests, but don’t actually “use” Facebook. I doubt many of those people will now like the idea of switching to something new that may have “cool” features but is essentially the same idea.
People are busy trying to keep groceries on the table and don’t want any more “learning curves”
More on this topic in this post > Why I Use Facebook AND Twitter, What About Google+?
In this video I give a quick look at how I use Google Reader to find great content. Note: It’s a screen capture, so click to view in full screen if you are having trouble seeing what I am doing here. Hope it helps…

What’s Google Reader?
Google Reader gives you headlines and links to the most recent stories from your favorite websites, all in one screen. It is an RSS feed service, and if you don’t know what that is, don’t worry. Neither did I at first. Look at your favorite blog or website, and you’ll likely find a button or a link that says “Subscribe in RSS”
If I Were a Google Executive…
I’d drive a real nice car! lol… I would also promote Google Reader to more people and look for ways to integrate it with Facebook and Twitter seamlessly. That would be very helpful to a lot of people, as opposed to Google+ which is just “cool.”
What to do first?
Sign up for free Google Mail (gmail) account (don’t worry you don’t have to switch your regular email to this). Log in to your new gmail account and then look for row of buttons at top of page. Click on the Reader button. Then, anytime you find a blog or a site that you would like updates from, click the RSS Feed button on the site and you’ll be able to add it to Google Reader in a matter of seconds.
Why Should I?
It’s a huge time saver in looking for latest news or interesting content to share on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, wherever you like. People assume that I spend hours scouring sites for posts to share online. I don’t. I have Google Reader set up to receive feeds from my favorite sites on a variety of subjects. I log in, I look at Google Reader, I post. I spend less than 10 minutes a day doing that.
If you do, would you please do one or more small favors for me? I’ll be your biggest fan…
