Having worked in “traditional” media (television) for more than 20 years, I have been astounded at the growth of social media and it’s impact on how we do business as freelance media professionals. It’s also apparent to me that many of my colleagues in television and music production are not taking part in this revolution, often because of a lack of understanding of how it all works.
Social media is about people sharing information and learning from each other, not directly pitching products.
READ ON and see 3 concise videos that lay out the basic concepts. >>>
Included here are three videos which I hope you will find useful. The first two I had nothing to do with, don’t know the people that produced them, have no financial ties to whatsoever. It is just great information I want to share with you, and hope you find useful. The third video is mine and is an explanation of how I see social media affecting my business and why I spend time developing my accounts on FaceBook, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube.
First, some amazing statistics in this video which puts the phenomenal growth of social media in perspective with that of television, radio and print advertising. It is mind blowing.

I am learning all the time and cringe when someone refers to me as an “expert” in social media. I am taking steps to implement what I have learned, because I see it’s potential for growing my business. It is clear to me that in order to move forward in the “new economy” I need to develop ways to adapt my skills in video and music production to communicating via social media.
Next – a very simple explanation of how social networking works.

One of the most exciting realizations I have had is that social networking and marketing is not that different from traditional marketing. It is an open door to reaching vast amounts of people who may be interested in the services I provide and the projects I am producing. Social media is about people sharing information and learning from each other, not directly pitching products.
Finally, one of my offerings on Youtube – Social Networking for Freelancers – Feedback welcome – please post comments below and share this post on your social pages if you find it helpful. Thanks for tuning in…

People are distrustful of “traditional advertising” and respond better to doing business with people and companies that have offered them valuable content with no strings attached. Naturally if people like what you put on FaceBook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube or any other social media outlet, they are more open to finding out about what you are actually selling as time goes on. It doesn’t take a genius to do all this, but it does take TIME. Nothing happens overnight, just as in traditional advertising, it’s what you do daily or weekly that makes a difference.
