It’s a busy week here and I have had several requests to see this post again so here we go, reminding you to:
KEEP THE SOCIAL IN SOCIAL MEDIA
Hope you find this helpful. I look forward to your comments and criticism, it’s all good. Won’t you post something in comments below? Many thanks, Trace
Freelance Media Professional Tracy Ready discusses the analogy of social media for freelancers as going to series of parties and outlines the relationship between social networks, a blog and small business websites.
“Have fun at the party but don’t be a jerk!”

Note from Trace:
Thanks for tuning in! If you don’t know me, I make my living in television production – director of photography, writer, producer – and I am a singer and songwriter currently finishing up full length studio CD (that’s our music on intro and end credits of this video).
Why am I here talking about social media?
It’s because I am having fun learning about it, meeting lots of people from all over the world, and the fact that social networking is having a positive impact on my business. I want to share what I am learning; I like being self-employed and believe that as freelancers we need to stick together and help each other. If you are having trouble understanding social media, maybe watching these videos and seeing what I am up to can help you blaze your own path for your business.
The Video
In this video, I outline the relationship of having a blog to drive traffic to your sites. I forgot to mention on camera that it is not necessary to have a blog to get increased traffic but it does help. I don’t want people to get the impression that you have to start a blog. Start with FaceBook, interact with people and be interesting, helpful and informative. Then, every once in a while, post a link to your business site or a project you are involved in. If you are already on FaceBook, expand to Linkedin, Twitter and YouTube. Expand out your social media presence as it is comfortable to you. Don’t try to take it all on at once because you’ll likely get overwhelmed and give up and that won’t do you any good at all.
A blog is great if you like to write (like I do) and are comfortable with spending some extra time with it. Otherwise, just apply the concepts I talk about in this video on social networks. Have fun with it! Over time it will make a difference in your business. Again, it does take TIME.

Hi Tracy,
I agree with you wholeheartedly and the ‘cocktail party’ analogy was awesome. There’s definitely a learning curve in figuring out how to balance the business and the personal parts to Social Media. And I am reminded that everyone is a newbie at one time or another. Thanks for a great video!

Tracy, the information you gave in your video about, what I call, ‘proper social media etiquette’ was excellent!
As you indicated, one should keep ‘social’, in social media. Thanks for the insight …
Greg
