Crowd funding this Holiday Season: What will you do?

Independently creative people from all around the world are turning to crowd funding this season to fuel their creative ventures and for good reasons.

Indie Artists thrive when you buy

First, it’s hard for independent artists, musicians and filmmakers to make an impact in a digital world. Today the public is inundated with Facebook posts, Youtube videos and a barrage of paid advertising from corporate entities across all forms of media.

Secondly, if you are self funded or self employed at your business, you know the old adage is true: “Time IS Money.” It is a struggle for people to devote time, mental energy and limited financial resources to creative projects when its tough to just keep groceries on the table and gas in the car.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
When you see a crowd funding project linked on Facebook, or in an email from a friend, don’t just say “oh that’s nice”: DO SOMETHING. FOLLOW THE LINK, CHECK OUT THE PROJECT. If it is something that you think is a good idea, or it’s music you like or a film you believe in, DONATE or SHARE or BOTH.
It makes a difference to the artist or entrepreneur who posted the link and is working hard to expose a project to the public, on a shoestring budget. You don’t have to donate, but even a small donation will help them reach their goal. If you can’t donate anything, at least make a comment on it, share the link with others in your network, and let the person who is working on it know that you believe in what they are doing. IT MATTERS.

1. DONATE
Give just a little bit, or give a lot. Every dollar matters to small business startups, indie musicians, artists and filmmakers.
2. SHARE
Can’t give any money? That’s OK, we’re all on austerity here. SHARE the link to the project on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, wherever you interact most. Comment on the project. Send a message of encouragement to the person who created it. It HELPS.
Either or both, it all counts.

So what is this “crowd funding” and why should I care?
“Crowd funding” or “crowd sourcing” in general terms refers to platforms like KickStarter and IndieGoGo which allow people to describe their projects online and raise funding through small contributions of individuals. It allows people with limited finances who have great ideas to implement them and spread the message about their project or small business to a wide audience.

My hidden agenda!
OK, not so hidden. I’ve launched an IndieGoGo project for Trace Relations Music supporting the making of the documentary film South Texas Soul: The San Antonio Sound.

No it’s not just about me.
I encourage you to support small business and independent artists, filmmakers and musicians of all genres, wherever you are. Every little “like” on a Facebook post or RT of a video link on Twitter, every comment, and especially every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference for your friends who are trying to gain momentum using crowd funding platforms.
PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY OR ANYONE WHOSE PROJECTS INTRIGUE OR INSPIRE YOU.
