Road Trippin’ the South this Summer, Come along?

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”
- Martin Buber, Philosopher (1878 – 1965)

My wife Lauren and I love a road trip. It suits us. I have flown thousands of miles in my career, and much prefer driving the back roads than sitting in an airport, any day. She is in total agreement. We enjoy the time together, stopping where we want, when we want; the adventure of being on the road, with only a brief outline of the trip planned.

We like photography, local history, small towns, back roads, nature, good food, live music and quirky roadside attractions; the more unexpected, the better.

hittin' the road...

hittin’ the road…

This summer we’ll be headed through Texarkana, Texas, then east through Arkansas and Tennessee to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville, North Carolina. Coming home, we’ll take a southern swing back to Texas through Mississippi and Louisiana.

The truth is, we have no idea what we’ll find along the way, only that we plan to enjoy every moment.

Come along? We’ll be posting photos to Twitter and Instagram throughout the road trip. We welcome suggestions for places we might like to visit.
Thanks for tuning in… Trace

Why I want to drive a Ford to “Vanishing Texas”

This old blue workhorse, my 2004 Ford Expedition has carried me in and out of some strange places. Now this one is heaving a sigh every time I turn the key. It occurred to me, wouldn’t Ford like to sponsor “Vanishing Texas”?

My ongoing quest to document in pictures forgotten structures in Texas takes me to the edges of the state. My work in broadcast television and corporate video puts me in a lot of cities every year. What if I were to capture my truck in these varied locales and talk about it? Think that would be worth something to Ford?

Hashtag this on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram #FordSocial #FordVanishingTX – Help me get their attention! Thank you.

YES, it’s a real project. In my travels, I am all over the state of Texas. It’s my mission along the way to find and photograph as many of the scenes of “Vanishing Texas” that I can in the next 2 years. Meanwhile, I will be releasing more youtube videos, posting photos to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram, and stories on this blog. I hope to culminate the whole deal with a book of photographs and stories from the road in 2017.

What I need is a sponsor and Ford Trucks would be a natural fit, in my mind. Read more…

Crossing the Digital Divide.. in a hammock! Infographic

Yes! I took some time off, shared some good times with my brothers, then retreated into the East Texas woodlands for a getaway with my lovely wife.

My office earlier this week!

My office earlier this week!

I believe it’s important in business and social media to TAKE a BREAK. It can bring you back to your daily existence with a new attitude. I wrote about it last week in this post -> Done Nothing in Social Media? No big deal. Jump in.

With that in mind, hope you’ll forgive a “quickie” post as I settle back into my world here at Trace Productions.

I am intrigued by this great infographic courtesy of KISSMETRICS and the fact that “2013 marks the first year U.S. adults spent more time viewing media on digital devices – more than any other form. It appears that print, radio and even television have officially become unseated as dominant sources of media.” Read more…

Top 7 Posts: Balancing Creativity, Business and Social Media

As a writer, photographer and Internet geek, it’s always thought provoking for me to look at Google Analytics on this site. Each week, this tool reveals which posts have gotten the most traffic, causing me to think about the content, and which topics are resonating with readers.

all about these things....

all about these things….

My life as a freelancer in video production, music and marketing is a constant balancing act, between time spent on speculative creative projects, paying clients, social media interaction and evaluating new technologies. I enjoy all of it, but it can get overwhelming to the psyche. That’s why I write about these topics, it helps me to further explore, understand and interact with others who also face similar challenges in life.

I also like to laugh (it’s important!), so I am glad to see #4 “Church Ladies with Typewriters” made the list…

The allure of a Texas river… Photography

Ideas, like large rivers, never have just one source.- Willy Ley
I have always been drawn to rivers. Near them, I can be alone with my thoughts and yet still connected with the rest of the planet. It’s all tied to my youth, and much time spent splashing around in streams, skipping stones and camping with my family, most often near some stretch of serene river.

The feeling of being connected and yet all alone is still with me today, and rivers have become one of my favorite photographic challenges as well.

I have spent much of the last 25 years bouncing back and forth between Dallas and San Antonio, Texas, personally, professionally and musically. In my travels I try to avoid the mind numbing Interstate experience in favor of Texas Highway 281 and the towns and scenes along that path. Recently I took these shots of the Pedernales and Blanco rivers in the Texas Hill Country, compiling a collection of images for a video to the song The Flood by Trace Relations.
